James Murphree, son of Daniel and Sarah Murphree, was born about 1741, likely in Bertie County, North Carolina, where his parents were living at least as early as 1743. He later lived in Orange and Chatham Counties, North Carolina, and in Pendleton District, South Carolina. His first wife's name was Mille (or Millie), to whom he was married by 1 Oct 1779 in Chatham County.
James Murphree was the first person named in the will of his father Daniel Murphree, made 10 Nov 1769. He and his brother William Murphree were made executors of their father's will. According to Bill Linder's book, it is uncertain whether James Murphree or his brother William was the oldest son.
The following have been determined to be James and Millie Murphree's children. There may have been others:
1. Elijah Murphree, died before 25 Sep 1821 in West Feliciana Parish, LA. Elijah apparently did not marry since his father James Murphree was his heir at his death.
Elijah Murphree Died Intestate in Louisiana in 1821
1821. "The State of South Carolina, Pendleton District. Whereas I, James Murphree, of the District aforesaid have lately understood that my son Elijah Murphree late of Feliciana Parish the town of Jackson in the State of Louisiana had lately died intestate And afterwards on the 25th day of September 1821, I did make a Power of Attorney to my son Uriah Murphree and John Stephens to collect and receive of any persons all the estates which I was entitled to as heir at law of my son Elijah Murphree deceased and my son Uriah Murphree did go to the said town of Jackson and did take into his possession all or a part of the Estates of the said Elijah Murphree. And it now a considerable time since I have heard from my said son Uriah and fearing that my said son Uriah may be also dead I have employed my two sons-in-law Jeremiah Field and John Stephens to go to the town of Jackson in the said State of louisiana to see what is done and if my said son Uriah has collected the Estates of my said son Elijah then I do hereby appoint the said Jeremiah Field and John Stephens in my name, place, and stead to collect and receive to to my use from the said Uriah Murphree one half of all the Estates which my said son Elijah was possessed of and in my name place and stead to give a sufficient discharge for so much of the Estates And in case my said son Uriah Murphree shall be now dead then I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said jeremiah Field and John Stephens my true and lawful attorneys for me and in my name place and stead to ask demand sue for recover and receive of and from any and all persons whomsoever all the estates which my said son Elijah Murphree died seized and possessed of -- hereby giving and granting to my said Attornies, as fully simply complete and entire power and authority in the premises as I have and possess to do any, all, and everything or things which I could, if personally present..."

3. Mary Murphree, md. 1804 Pickens County, SC, John Stephens (d. 15 Mar 1873 Cherokee Co. GA, a son of John Stephens, Rev. War soldier from Chatham County NC, and his wife ___ Benson). Children: Annie Stephens (Mrs. Hendrix); Millie Stephens (Mrs. Haynes); Lucy Stephens (Mrs. Cobb); Uriah Stephens, md. Hannah Ann McConnell; James Murphree Stephens, md. Lucinda Keith; Elijah Stephens; and Benson Stephens.
4. Dau. Murphree md. Jeremiah Field.
James Murphree married (2nd) in December 1803 in South Carolina, Rutha (Ruth) Davis (Mrs. John Hudgins) who was born about 1758 in Chatham County, North Carolina, a daughter of Elnathan Davis and Mary Collins.
James Murphree died in 1831, possibly in Anderson or Pickens County, South Carolina. The Revolutionary War pension application (R7515) for Ruth (Davis) Hudgins Murphree (Mrs. James Murphree) says she wed (2) in Dec. 1803 in South Carolina to James 'Murphy' who died in 1831. She died 17 November 1847 in Habersham County, GA.
